Arterior’s
Decorating Guide

Have you ever wondered how to choose the right wall covering for a room? Do patterns befuddle you?

Way back in the roaring 1920s, wallpaper was considered the ultimate status symbol for your home. Today, just like then, it’s creating luxurious spaces in homes and offices with the added bonus of durability.

Arterior Wall Coverings has put together resources and tips for understanding wall murals and wall papers.

FAQ’s
Wallpaper colors and patterns make a profound impact on the mood of a room.

Choosing a Color

  • Choose wall coverings that create the feeling you want to create. Don’t worry if the colors aren’t “in”, choose colors that fit your personal style and that you enjoy.
  • Light color papers and murals reflect light more and can help create bright, airy looking rooms.
  • To further enhance the power of light reflection, use wallpapers with a smooth texture or a light sheen to brighten a room.
  • Dark colors create cozy, intimate, quiet spaces.
  • Bright colors attract attention and work great in active places like children’s rooms and recreation areas.
  • You can create visual interest in rooms with subdued wallpaper by adding bright colored accent pieces.

Pattern Basics

  • All wallpaper patterns fall into one of four basic styles:
geometric, large print, small print, and overall print.
  • Geometric patterns include plaids, stripes, and grids. Patterns with strong vertical lines make ceilings look higher.
  • Large Prints add visual interest to a room
  • Small Prints add a touch of pattern to form a subtle backdrop
  • Overall Patterns emphasize color and can be used in any room.
  • To create your own decorating scheme, keep these two simple pattern points in mind 1. Color and 2. Scale. Color should be alike, scale should not.

The most important part of any wallpapering or mural project is making sure the wall surface is properly and thoroughly prepared. Investing in wall prep  before hanging the covering will  insure proper adhesion, easy removal in the future and satisfactory results that will last for years.
Wallpaper comes in varied lengths and widths. In general, wallpaper is priced by the linear yard, or single rolls.

It can be packaged as double or triple roll bolts. Wall covering manufacturers do this to ensure more usable wallpaper from the same run and dye lot.

Commercial, wallcoverings are manufactured specifically for commercial use and come either 52 or 54 inches wide. They are sold by the linear yard. A lineal yard is the width of the roll (52″ or 54″) with a length of 36 inches (1 yard).

Every wallpaper dries tight to the wall. Because of this, wallpaper installers need to prepare the wall as if they were preparing to paint. Some wallcoverings show more imperfection than others. Metallics and light-colored wallcoverings and murals will, of course, show more imperfections than colorful patterns or heavily woven papers. To have a successful outcome, it’s important to repair any imperfections that you can see or feel on the surface of the wall before installation. Arterior Wall Coverings has expertise in preparing your walls to make them look their best.

We always prefer to remove existing paper whenever possible. However, If removing the old paper will damage the integrity of the drywall or plaster, we can prime the existing wallcovering, then prep any uneven surfaces, and install over old wallpaper. We find each project is different, so we recommend consulting Arterior Wall Coverings for your specific project needs.
